ha or more. Our results indicate that the 50-ha BCI plot lost a significant amount of 20 biomass (−0.8±2.2Mgha−1 yr−1) over the past decade (2000–2010). Over the entire island and during the same period, mean AGB change is −0.4±3.7Mgha−1 yr−1. Old growth forests lost biomass (−0.7±3.5Mgha−1 yr−1), whereas the secondary forests gained biomass (+0.4±3.4Mgha−1 yr−1). Our analysis demonstrates that repeated Li-

Airborne lidar-based estimates of tropical forest structure in complex terrain: opportunities and trade-offs for REDD+

BACKGROUND Carbon stocks and fluxes in tropical forests remain large sources of uncertainty in the global carbon budget. Airborne lidar remote sensing is a powerful tool for estimating aboveground biomass, provided that lidar measurements penetrate dense forest vegetation to generate accurate estimates of surface topography and canopy heights. Tropical forest areas with complex topography prese...

Quantifying Dynamics in Tropical Peat Swamp Forest Biomass with Multi-Temporal LiDAR Datasets

Tropical peat swamp forests in Indonesia store huge amounts of carbon and are responsible for enormous carbon emissions every year due to forest degradation and deforestation. These forest areas are in the focus of REDD+ (reducing emissions from deforestation, forest degradation, and the role of conservation, sustainable management of forests and enhancement of forest carbon stocks) projects, w...

Above-ground biomass estimation in closed canopy Neotropical forests using lidar remote sensing: factors affecting the generality of relationships

Aim Previous studies have developed strong, site-specific relationships between canopy metrics from lidar (light detecting and ranging) remote sensing data and forest structural characteristics such as above-ground biomass (AGBM), but the generality of these relationships is unknown. In this study, we examine the generality of relationships between lidar metrics and forest structural characteri...

Advances in forest characterisation, mapping and monitoring through integration of LiDAR and other remote sensing datasets

The diversity of scales and modes in which ground, airborne and spaceborne LiDAR operate has increased opportunities for quantitatively assessing forest structure, biomass and species composition and obtaining more general information on dynamics and ecological/commercial value. However, the level of information extracted can be increased even further by integrating data from other sensor types...

Estimation of Aboveground Biomass Using Manual Stereo Viewing of Digital Aerial Photographs in Tropical Seasonal Forest

The objectives of this study are to: (1) evaluate accuracy of tree height measurements of manual stereo viewing on a computer display using digital aerial photographs compared with airborne LiDAR height measurements; and (2) develop an empirical model to estimate stand-level aboveground biomass with variables derived from manual stereo viewing on the computer display in a Cambodian tropical sea...
